Executive Summary
The 2 3/8" SCSSSV is a wireline-retrievable subsurface safety valve used in small-bore and mature wells with low to moderate flow rates.
It uses a flapper-type mechanism that closes automatically in case of equipment failure or loss of surface control pressure, isolating the well to prevent uncontrolled flow. The valve’s self-equalizing design helps maintain reliable operation during shut-in and restart.
Because it is wireline-retrievable, the valve can be serviced or replaced without pulling the tubing string, reducing well intervention time. It is rated for pressures up to 10,000 psi and is installed in standard landing nipples compatible with 2 3/8" tubing.

Detailed Description

The 2 3/8" Surface-Controlled Subsurface Safety Valve (SCSSSV) is designed to shut in a well in the event of uncontrolled flow caused by equipment failure or damage. Installed in the upper wellbore, it provides emergency closure of the producing conduits to isolate the wellbore if there is a failure or damage to surface production control systems.
This valve uses a self-equalizing, surface-controlled, flapper-type mechanism that closes reliably when hydraulic control pressure is lost. The flapper is made from solid bar stock and has sealing surfaces located outside the flow path when open, which helps reduce erosion and extends the valve’s service life. It is rated for working pressures up to 10,000 psi.
The valve fits 2 3/8" (60.33 mm) tubing and is installed in landing nipples with seal bore options of 1.710" or 1.875". Valve internal diameter options are 0.62" or 0.75", allowing selection based on flow requirements. The wireline retrievable design permits servicing or replacement of major valve components without pulling the entire tubing string, reducing intervention time and operational disruption.
This valve is typically used in wells with smaller tubing sizes that require dependable emergency shut-in capability. Its design balances reliability, durability, and ease of maintenance to provide effective well control in a variety of well conditions.
